When Your Summer Fling Rises from the “Ghosted” Grave: How to Navigate Cuffing Season with Intention

Ah…November. The leaves are turning, sweaters are back, and suddenly — so is your summer fling…

“Wait, I thought spooky szn was over,” you think to yourself. So whyyy is your old flame back from the grave seemed to have been hiding in when he ghosted you??

You know the one: the mustached man you had so much fun with this summer, who disappeared right when things felt promising. The one who “needed space,” “wasn’t ready,” and disappeared right as things started to heat up.

Now, as the air gets crisp and his DMs get quiet, he remembers… you exist.

Welcome, darling, to Cuffing Season — that yearly phenomenon where casual daters suddenly crave connection, warmth, and a plus-one for the holidays. They’ve gone from “not ready” to “meet my family” and your head is (understandably) spinning.

So before you reply to that “Hey stranger 👀” text, let’s talk about what’s really happening — and how to navigate it with intention, not impulse.

**Author’s note: while some hearts may feel warmed by that unexpected text, others may feel the impulse to send a scathing novel-length-text lecture about how you “deserve to be treated.” I won’t tell you what you should do, because that’s ultimately up to you. BUT my dad actually pulled this move on my mom, and now they’ve been married for 40 years. Which is why I don’t subscribe to dating “rules” because truly, there are always exceptions.

This article is written to help you decide if you want to risk being the exception, or to empower your intuition that you’re the rule (which is totally okay & you can walk away in PEACE!)

Why They’re Back Now

As summer fades, people start feeling nostalgic. Their friend group slows down, nights get quieter, and loneliness sets in.
That sudden “I miss you” may not necessarily be about you — rather, it might be about comfort.

Familiarity feels safe when everything else cools down.
But remember: comfort isn’t commitment.

If the text from the grave is followed with a clear action plan to see you, that’s positive. But stay cautious. You don’t want to find yourself in the same situationship you just escaped.

So look for more. Is there greater effort being extended? Is he being vulnerable with you? Does he take initiative? Or is he just throwing a rock & seeing who will pick it up??

I say this with love but don’t be the sucker that falls for it. You can be warm & responsive without getting carried away in feelings over effort. In the words of the ever-wise dating coach Matthew Hussey: “interest is not investment.” Someone can be interested in you, and that’s great. They can flirt with you, maybe even see you causally. But if there isn’t a real investment behind their kissy face texts, it’s best to respectfully let that connection go.

The Trap of Cuffing Season

Cuffing season can trick even the most self-aware woman into thinking “maybe this time is different.” However, just because someone resurfaces doesn’t mean they’ve evolved. And I know from experience it can feel exciting to have that man who you feel so much chemistry with pop back on your radar. Your imagination can run away with the potential you see in him. Which in the end, will only leave you hurt, alone, and frustrated once the New Year rings in…IF you act out a fantasy instead of staying earnest with the facts.

Many people chase connection in the cold months for validation, instead of real partnership. They don’t want to build a relationship — they just don’t want to be alone.

And here’s the thing: urgency isn’t alignment.

If it didn’t work in the summer, don’t romanticize the reunion just because it’s autumn. Was there a real reason you didn’t work out? Did you ignore incompatibilities because he was over 6 ft?

I’m a firm believer that the beginning stages of dates can be murky. I don’t subscribe to the narrative that you’ll find a perfect person and everything will just work out. It’s OKAY if someone meets you & isn’t sure if they want to commit to you after one date (regardless of how dazzling you are!) Especially as you get into your 30’s & 40’s, there are so many more variables that play into a connection than feelings.

There are careers, divorces, kids, and a myriad of complex factors that (for the most part) didn’t really exist when you were dating in your 20’s.

That being said, if you met someone incredible that things didn’t work out with: do you know why they didn’t work out?

The “why” behind the disappearance will offer clarity in consideration of rekindling!

How to Respond with Power

If you get that text or “random call,” here’s how to stay grounded and give yourself the best chance to sus the situation:

  1. Pause before replying.
Ask yourself: am I responding from curiosity or craving? I know it’s embarassing to admit, but the “drama” is what drives a lot of singles to unconsciously reject relationships. You can get addicted to the chaos of newness or even the superiority of being mistreated. I see it constantly. And while I think that’s a relatively normal chapter of dating..it’s okay to leave that behavior in your 20’s.

  2. Seek clarity, not closure.
“Hey, it’s been a while — what made you reach out?” is a power move. Give yourself the clarity you need to understand if this is just another game that will leave you out in the cold, or if he’s genuinely ready to step up this time.

  3. Observe the follow-through.
Words impress, but consistency reveals. Watch for genuine investment from him. And no, I don’t mean how much he spends on dinner dates or flowers, but how much does he give to building a relationship?

  4. Stay in your standard.
If you’ve healed past versions of yourself, don’t date like you haven’t. Meaning: if you’ve been reactive to men who are emotionally unavailable in the past (you may confuse this push/pull uncertainty with “excitement,”) and this triggers a similar response because he’s giving you juuuust enough to stay top of mind, but not enough to feel like you’re building a real relationship–let him go. I promise, you’ll find someone else.

Dating Intentionally

This fall, let’s make cuffing season a season of conscious connection, not convenience.

  • Say yes to reciprocity > routine.

  • Seek emotional depth > temporary warmth.

  • Choose alignment > attention.

Real love won’t arrive as a recycled fling wrapped in continued confusion. It’ll feel grounded, and reliable. This will be the time you get to lean into trust. And have your trust reciprocated.

If he ghosted you in July but wants to “catch up” in November, let him know you’ve evolved — and your availability has, too.

Because this cuffing season, you’re not just getting cozy…
You’re getting clear. 💋
