With news of Taylor Swift & Travis Kelce’s engagement taking over the internet, it’s pinging the question: are smart, sophisticated, successful women officially in our Marriage Era?
In today’s fast-paced (and let’s face it: CYNICAL) world, finding happiness in marriage can feel like distant fantasy. Like you’ve heard tales of it happening, but you’re just not seeing it happen for you. It can be maddening–especially if you’re the last single girl in your friend-group. Yet some women have found solace in hanging out with equally as ambitious (and single) “new” friends. Which I know, can definitely be comfortable and fun and can even placate you into thinking…you’re probably actually better off alone.
But you don’t really buy that, do you?
You KNOW you’re hiding behind fear & countless bad dates, and still something deep inside you is saying “when will it be my turn?”
BABY GIRL, the time is *now.* And I can promise you…your ambition and your fabulous career that you’ve worked hard to build do not need to be sacrificed to get your happily ever after. Marriage is on the rise, and Taylor Swift is possibly the beacon that will call the girls home…
Is the Carrie Era of romanticizing causal sex & non-monogamy as “empowerment” for working women, over?
Research consistently shows that working couples—those where both partners are professionally engaged—often report the highest levels of marital satisfaction and personal fulfillment. From fostering mutual respect to balancing traditional dynamics, working couples like Tay & Trav are redefining what it means to thrive in love.
The Happiness Edge of Working Couples
So what makes couples happier? And more specifically, what sets working couples apart than the rising “trad movement”? This is a complex conversation for me, personally, because growing up I always dreamed of being a SAHM. I NEVER wanted to work or build a career. I didn’t even bother finishing school because I figured I’d get married “soon enough” and would just have babies.
SPOILER: things did not work out that way…
When both partners are employed, they often share a sense of purpose, mutual respect, and financial stability that strengthens their bond. A 2020 study from the Annual Review of Sociology highlights that couples at all socioeconomic levels increasingly value equal contributions to housework and childcare, with working couples reporting higher relationship satisfaction when these standards are met. They’re building their life and expanding their ability to enjoy it TOGETHER, as equal partners. And it’s time to stop pretending like this isn’t an ideal situation for modern times.
This equality fosters a partnership where both individuals feel valued. Which reduces overall resentment over the longevity of the relationship, and deepens their emotional intimacy. Both partners show up together–instead of one solely relying on the other (financially or otherwise.)
The Seduction of Shared Ambition
Working couples thrive together because they share effort & purpose independently.
A 2010 study in Personal Relationships found that couples who both contribute to the household—whether through income or domestic efforts—experience less distress from perceived inequities. For high-achieving couples, (like those we match at Maclynn International Agency,) this translates to a dynamic where both partners celebrate each other’s successes, rather than compete or shrink.
They’re not just lovers but teammates. Navigating life’s challenges with aligned goals both for your family and your own personal development makes the relationship your safe haven–the place you go to REST, as well as expand. (Rather than the place that causes you anxiety or frustration, as is often the case with low-income or disproportionate earnings between spouses.)
I was on X recently and came across
a study observed by Brad Wilcox who observed a rather UNSHOCKING statistic that men with prestigious jobs are more likely to cheat on their wives than women with prestigious jobs are likely to cheat on their husbands.
HOWEVER, what *was* shocking was that women of “low occupational prestige” cheat on their husbands MORE OFTEN than men with prestigious jobs. And if that wasn’t enough…the study continued to share that women who are “homemakers” or aren’t working cheat on their husbands more than men of “low occupational prestige,” and actually that non-working men cheat on their wives more than anyone.
Now, it’s ALSO true that infidelity in marriage actually happens far less than we’ve been conditioned to believe–which I LOVE. I’m all about honoring those marriage vows, you know? But at the same time, we can’t keep pretending like the work dynamic of a married couple doesn’t matter…
The study suggests that economic insecurity and lack of purpose can drive dissatisfaction, leading some women to seek validation outside the marriage. In contrast, men in less “prestigious” jobs, often secure in their professional and social standing, report lower rates of cheating, possibly due to greater marital investment and social scrutiny. (The cynic in me suspects it also could have to do with being perceived as “less desirable” than doctors, CEO’s, etc., and therefore are less inclined to even go looking for something outside of the woman who chose them.)
This finding underscores why working couples often fare better. Employment provides not just financial stability but also a sense of identity and purpose, reducing the temptation to stray. A 2017 study in Archives of Sexual Behavior further notes that individuals with a history of infidelity are at higher risk of repeating it, but stable, purpose-driven environments—like those fostered by working couples—can mitigate this risk. For working couples, shared professional goals and mutual respect create a protective buffer against relational discord.
Take Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce, whose (finally!) posted engagement has sparked global buzz. Both are at the pinnacle of their careers—Swift as a music icon and Kelce as an NFL star. Their relationship exemplifies how two driven individuals can support each other’s ambitions while building a partnership grounded in what seems to be mutual admiration. I don’t know about you but I am much more convinced that T&T are genuine in their relationship that a certain other actor couple who is allegedly no longer friends with Tay…
I will not mention their names as I do not want to be subpoenaed for their ongoing litigation.
But what Taylor and Travis getting engaged signals to me, is that even the arguably most influential, successful independent woman in the WORLD, still craves not just partnership, but the ultimate commitment of marriage.
Balancing Masculine and Feminine Dynamics
My own research and experience working with powerful singles in the modern dating world, has shown me that a key factor in any working couples’ happiness is their ability to balance traditional masculine and feminine dynamics.
That’s why as a coach AND a matchmaker, I have spent years learning & emphasizing the importance of nurturing relationships where she shines in her feminine energy and he leads with masculine strength. This dynamic isn’t about outdated stereotypes but about complementary NATURE GIVEN (hello, biological) roles that foster harmony. For professional couples especially, this balance is often the hardest to figure out. And that’s why I’m so passionate about working with A-Type women when they’re single to help them unearth their inner feminine BEFORE it becomes a power-struggle in the relationship. When both partners contribute financially, it carves space for them to each to express their complementary masculine/feminine selves without frustrating MOTHER/MAN BABY dynamics (which end up becoming the default of successful women who don’t know how to surrender in their relationship without becoming “submissive.”)
Or, couples fall into the increasingly popular “trad fad” dynamic, which I’m convinced now is more about fantasy than reality. I’m sorry, you can call me whatever you want to, but I don’t think women should be financially dependent on their husbands in 2025. We don’t NEED to do that anymore, and you’ll be much better protected against the unknown if you have an independent source of income. You’ll also be a better mother and person if you have things to pour your heart into that develop your sense of self OUTSIDE of your marriage or kids. Because one day, your kids will leave your house, and if they became your whole identity at home…who will you be when they grow up??
And this is absolutely NOT to shame SAHM’s!! My mom was one and I admire the heck out of her. But times are different now, and maintaining an income from home with your babies is super accessible. Let them see you continue to grow & advocate for yourself and be independently astonishing.
I’ve been building my own business for 6 1/2 years to run from the comfort of my couch, (or the restaurant of a 5-star hotel) and to be autonomous when I need breaks…like a planned maternity leave & mom-life adjustment. YOU CAN DO ANYTHING. Women in 2025 have the ability to &*truly* “have it all” like no other generation in american history, at least! I friggin love that, and I think it’s silly not to embrace what the generations of women prior have paved for us.
Don’t you think?!
Plus for me, building my own income has also created the ability to support my husband as he explores a different career…outside of finance…where he can be more present at home. At this point, he does the majority of the cooking/cleaning as we share the financial responsibilities and taking care of our dog. Maybe that will change down the line–but the point is that we have the ability to be flexible and try out dynamics to find what works best for us (and our future kids!)
Taylor could retire TODAY and her income/impact would sustain her family for the rest of eternity. That’s more than just success, that’s FREEDOM.
Why Working Couples Win
Working couples’ happiness stems from their ability to blend ambition, equality, and traditional dynamics. They:
- Unlearn Sabotaging Habits: My coaching helps clients shed patterns like chasing perfection, or running from raw/honest intimacy and letting their guard down FULLY…which can derail connection.
- Build Dynamic Partnerships: By balancing feminine and masculine energies, they create relationships where both partners thrive.
- Step into Lasting Love: Shared goals and mutual support pave the way for an epic, enduring romance.
The Swift-Kelce engagement illustrates this kinda perfectly…and not just because TS recently revealed her new found fascination for sourdough bread blogs.
Their high-powered careers and mutual admiration reflect the kind of partnership that thrives under pressure, much like the working couples I coach. And it’s true I’m not coaching music stars & NFL players (YET), I am working with some of the (privately) wealthiest singles…in the world. Their public support for each other’s successes mirrors the dynamics that research—and my practice—show lead to lasting happiness. So I’m rooting for them, and I wish the couple all the happiness in the WORLD.
